ben3lotus comments on previous post--customs duty is not 200 to 300% except in case of liquor where it is 215% (remember 2 liter alcohol is free) and for rest of the goods its 35% on baggage, (after giving away Rs 25000 free allowance) . For gold jewelry its only Rs 250 per 10 gm, after giving additional free allowance of rs. 10000 to male and 20000 to females in respect of jewelry. I don't think this is enormous or do u think it is?
have confidence in yourself, on arrival be gutsy enough to walk to the red channel counter and file a declaration and offer to pay duty- keep ur receipts handy so that valuation is done properly.
The problem of people trying to bypass customs and customs officials harassing people arises because the people are not aware about the rules. The customs officials use that to their advantage. People are told that there is V high official duty to be paid and it is in the best interest of people to settle it with them. I also feel that is the duty comes down to around 20%, collection will increase much more. The same thing happened with income tax, where the lower rates encouraged people to declare taxes more and increased collection.
We need to put the custom rates and allowances clearly on the back of declaration form and also on some big billboards.

That's right to information you are talking bout... Are the customs rate not displayed in the Airport premises?? I don't fly so don't know.... if it isn't, we (the people)should start advocating for it...
first thing first- the passengers on arrival are provided with a disembarkation card, which is for immigration purpose, then as one proceeds to customs, there is plenty of information on display, including the free allowances, vigilance contact numbers and you may freely ask for a passenger guideline booklet from customs.
as regards, whether we have a responsibility, rather than a requirement to be aware of the provisions of any regulations, it is as simple as that -i own a 15 k mobile, but am aware of features of 35 k communicator, i own a santro but am aware of specifications of merc, so when there is interest knowledge follows- if interest can lead to knowledge, why can't necessasity have the same effect- its your choice - whether you would plunge into buying a cell phone on mere shopkeeper's suggestion-no- almost all of us do research for it ,look around, browse net and what not! then why do we feel it not necessary to be aware of customs or any other rules relvant to us- if you are ignorant, then my friends, world is not simple enough to not to penalise you for your ignorance - it may be the cell phone or laptiop vendor around or customs or politician, or stock broker, credit card company, a cab driver, constable on the red light, municipal clerk, electricity babu, a rikshaw puller- the list is endless- but solution is one- braise urself with relevant knowledge about ur rights and responsibility- it is your right to live in a corruption free society but then is it not a little duty on all of us to help create one?
@ben3lotus- Agree again with u :-) , but in my last 2 foriegn trips i did not see the customes dty and allowance information anywhere on display, maybe i was 2 tired after the long flight,,,will surely check on it this time
u should also add Mumbai customs bribe rates.
India rising, India's next & thanks to the Customs official at Delhi new customs house who hide information even after an importer visits & seek guidance for importing goods. they hide information which they use to penalise or get bribe from the importer...
whats best that the same goods are basic requirement by the Delhi Govt. in view to make Delhi as best among world before Commenwealth games in 2010. the same goods have to be installed or the companies do not get license to business in Delhi..
Its a crux & Customs guys are worse..than anyone else..they r not commisioners ..they are commission agents...
Thats how India still welcomes the world to India & ask & expect them to business in India. Indian is 122 ranked to do business in India.
i need some advice. i was ripped off by indian customs.
i had a camera sent to me for personal use in mumbai. i left teh country 2 weeks later with that camera and had a letter from customs stating that i am leaving the country with this camera.
Indian gov't charged my $750 in duty and taxes!
the camera is not even worth that much
fedex is not helping much
what are my options? how do i get this resolved?
thank you
@JennyMac- I am still unclear what happened. 1-2 cameras at customs never create a problem. If you have not bribed anybody, then you have not been ripped off, but it looks like you got caught up in some dumb rule. I cant suggest much as i still cannot understand what went wrong..
I am a retd Air Force Officer and wish to import empty refillable ink cartridges & CISS for my printers. The total items (without ink) are costing little less than USD 100 and shipping is another USD 75.
How do I proceed? What duties are to be paid for these empty cartridges if inkjet printers in New Delhi. what would be the better mode of transportation?
It happened to me last year when I came. I had a digital camera for my personal use which I took it back with me. I was harrassed my at Hyderabad airport customs, It is so sad that even the supervising officer is involved with this scam. Finally he took $80.00 bribe openly.
